    HOMEWORK [1]

    Post by Sahar Al-Humaidan on Wed Mar 18, 2009 10:40 pm

    Welcome ms.Dana and my group members to my humble informations
    when I read that our discuccion will be about how to write our names,I drew a big smile thinking it will be a peace of cake for me.. but it is not..a big fat NOT!!javascript:emoticonp('Suspect')
    I spent five hours gathering informations in Arabic.. and so in English.
    so,there wasn't need for that big smilejavascript:emoticonp('Suspect')
    one more thing before starting..since i'm the worst explainer the human have ever seen I will not be sad for saying that for me..it is the hard painful truth.
    let's start..
    this discussion will be devided into three main part:
    1-Discussion aspects that ms.dana mentioned.
    2-Introducing what i've collected about writing arabic names in english.
    3-Commenting on my group's way of writing their names.

    .......................................................
    1-The aspects.
    a)capital and small letters.
    capitalize the first letter in every name..the others must be in small letters..for me it is that simple;).
    b)spelling.
    ummm it is the most important thing in writing names,actually we spell the name as the way we pronounce it..it is right thing to do..but what if you pronounce it in a wrong way..??most of us pronounce their name with wrong"فتحة"or"ضمة"or"كسره"or even "شدّه"..and don't care about it while it is the most important part in writing names..others know how to pronounce it correctly but the do mistake with the equal letters in English..like writing "الضمة" as "o" and so on.
    c)the use of(-),(_),(.)
    Humaidan,Sahar.M.G
    the only use of (,) is when writing your full name in the previos way your last name without (AL) then (,) then your name and(.) the first letter on your father name and(.)tht first letter of your grandfather.
    about(-) and (_) they used to separate Al(which I don't prefer using it for reasons I'll mention them) and the name of your family.
    d)the unnecessary decoration.
    if it is formal place never ever decorate your name,if it is not feel free:)
    e)the language you have to writ with
    just like decoration,do not ever write abbreviation way of your name..I did that but I changed it now..so my team criticize me for that.Smile
    _________________________________________________________________________________
    2-Informations I want to share them with you.
    a)arabic scientists always say don't writ AL in your last name because"المعرفة لاتحتاج إلى معرِّف" for me i wonder if it is like that why we say AL bla bla and AL bla bla in arabic!!!! it should be applied in arabic before english if is like this..
    b)there is something called lang voices which is(المدود) and many people write it in wrong way when in english so take this;
    oo=(و) / aa=(ا) /ee=(ي)
    and something called short voices which is(الحركات)..and here they are
    a=الفتحة
    i=الكسرة
    u=الضمة
    c)letters in arabic without equals in english
    a=(ع)
    q=(ق)
    s=(ص)
    kh=(خ)
    gh=(غ)
    dh=(ظ)،(ض)
    th=(ث)
    the=(ذ)
    t=(ط)
    h=(ح)
    d)we should double the letter in english if the equal in arabic is(مُشدّد)
    e.g.(مُحمّد)is written muhammad.
    e)the letter(يّ) in the end of most of us names is written(i)and(y)for (الشدّه) because every(ي)at the end is(مشدده)
    e.g.القرني is written AL-Qarney.
    f)my name is suaaad..is it written like this????
    no no no it is Sua'aad..if you have have two letters in your names equal the same letter in english just put(') between them.
    g)the first letter of names of Allah should be capitalized it is AbdulRhaman NOT Abdulrhaman
    _____________________________________________________
    3-My group's way of writing.
    Nora Althunayan
    ummm i love it when she writes nora not norah....it is a common mistake
    t in her last name i think should be capitalized
    i remember one important thing when i read althunayan..notice it is not althuneen because there is (فتحة) before(الياء) so go and search what happens in this case..
    SHAHD AL-mughem
    she capitalized every letter..i think it is wrong
    must be shahad..because there is(فتحة) on (الهاء).
    Al-Mughem not as what she did..[/color].

    Replay to Writing Names

    Post by Norah Al-Thunayan on Thu Mar 19, 2009 1:21 am

    wow well done Sahar I'm really stunned with these huge information

    it was really shocking to know that I wrote my name all these years without even

    thinking that it could be wrong I'm really shocked .......... Shocked

    you seemed to cover most of the issue ...

    but there is something that is really important ...

    we have in Arabic something called أل الشمسيه و أل القمريه

    أل القمريه its easy to pronounce

    But أل الشمسيه like in my family name

    I think its better to write it this way Ath-Thunayan

    we don't pronounce the Al so why pother writing it ??

    I'm not sure of that but I saw Riyadh once written like this >> Ar Riyadh

    I think this way is better because it closer to the pronunciation in Arabic

    well I agree with most of the things that Sahar've mentioned

    as for the Group Mistakes

    First of all, there is Me Embarassed yes i did a lot of mistakes my name before the editing it

    was Nora Althunayan what have Sahar mentioned about Norah is correct i don't know why

    didn't I think about editing it before I thought it was no big deal ..

    well after editing I think my name should be >> Norah Hamdan Ath Tunayan <<

    I'm still not sure whether I write slash or not I think this would be better Ath thunayan >> without a slash

    Then , there is Sahar Mohd

    I think she wrote her first name correctly I'm not sure what did she meant by Mohd ?? she already edited her name (( Sahar Al-Humaidan)) BUT

    She didn't write her middle (or second) name witch is required...
    Other than that i think every thing is correct ...

    Finally , there is SHAHD AL-mughem

    I agree with Sahar it should be Shahad not Shahd

    the family name I think it should be Al-Moqheem

    and she also didn't write her middle name..

    Well thats it I hope there is no mistakes Very Happy

    thanks alot miss dana wallah you don't know how i find my self with your way in teaching..
    about the second name i think it is better to mention the first letter of your father name if it is required unless it is exam or such thing..
    believe me i did ignore this point by purpose to have an extra door for discussion if we covered all things about names
    .........................................................
    nora mohd is shortcut of muhammad..
    i stick with this way of writing since my childhood
    it is informal
    and yeah it is my big mistake..
    Neutral
    about saying (أل القمرية وأل الشمسية) that is the second reasons for prefering not writing AL...revise the first reason in above above..
    wait for my second reply tomorrow inshaa'allah

    Back with my second reply..
    divided to three prats too..
    1-more cases in arabic don't match letter in english.
    2-notes every body should memorize them by heart for all names.
    3-suggestions.

    -----------------------------
    1- more cases in Arabic don't match letter in English.
    a)never ever write (bint) or (bin) which are(بنت) &(بن)....the matter is your name nothing else
    b)please pay attention that not all(الألف) mean that it A in English....look for (الهمزة) if it is (أ)now it is A.. but if it is (إ)it will be E..
    c)I did not talk about(السكون) since it is weak in arabic it won't take any letter more (حمْزه)=>Hamzah.
    d)there is something called(الألف المقصورة)..it matches A always..
    ------------------------------
    2-notes every body should memorize them by heart.
    (I did collect them from my experiences abroad)
    a)ummm how can i explain this point...!! there are three levels of Arabic you can writ your name by..
    classical standard: just like Holy Qur'an language..
    modern standard: we call it (الفصحى)..and I'm not about explain how to writ your names by because we did already..
    what I want to say is about the third part..
    local dialects (اللهجات المحلية):if you are from UAE and your name is (جاسم) but you pronounce it(ياسم) you can write it Yassim..
    both formal and informal it is O.K..I hope this example is enough..
    b)if your names is (حواء) don't write EVA ..we deal with sound not words and meaning...and this is for people's names just..
    I mean when you want to say(مدارس المملكة)..say Kingdom School..not Almmlakah..!!!
    ----------------------------
    3-Suggestions .
    a)of course we know that 3=(ع)..and 6=(ط)..
    isn't it a helpful way??? foe me I like it and I yeah it is informal because it is used just with chatting..but it solves the problem of misspelling with many people..
    b)About(مجمع اللغة العربية)..why don't they make a huge databases with Arabic names and matches in English..yeah I know it won't be complete by few years..noway but this..
    .................
    DONE

    first of all..thanks girls for all above..you made my day..
    then,
    hello Shahd..
    yes you are right..we pronounced it wrongly..
    we say(شَهَد) as if is the past of (يشْهد)..
    while the right way is to say(شَهْد)..just like what you have said..
    so I think you are way of writing your name is correct..
    but notice that you wrote it in capital honey...
    and about your family name..
    you thought if your name in the hospital card is written by this way it will be correct 100%???
    no no no the one who write our names is just a nurse so nothing to do with writing names..!!
    that's it for now..

    Hello lovely ladies..

    I have to admit this discussion is one of the best I've seen.

    I think you said and discussed everything on your mind and i'll need to tie some loose ends to finish it.

    There is the (الثنينان) issue at hand.

    It is true that there are no certain rules in writing names (in regards to spelling) but don't you agree that Al-Thunayan is easier to read and more recognizable (as a name) compared to : "Ath Thunayan"?

    Writing your name will shape your personality; I wont force a method on you when they are both correct.

    OMG

    I think my name caused a BIG issue Razz

    well i used to write it that way but I changed it

    because i read some where that you write your name according to the

    way that you pronounce it ..

    But I agree that the other way is clearer and also easier to recognize than my way ..

    i think I'll just stick with it ..

    The Final Editing What a Face
